Eleven years of
this nonsense

“Look in the mirror before you leave, and take one thing off. A glove. A ring. A face.”

— Coco Chanel

Somewhere below street level, the presses are running again. They wake one night a year, printing a magazine no newsstand will carry: HELLE, the journal of record for the fashionable dead. Its editors never sleep, its models never age, and its October Issue always closes the same way: with a party, and with you in it.

The brief is elegance first, horror in the details. Come as couture's answer to the undead: a widow on her second act, a vampire between castings, an heiress recently deceased. Or take anything glamorous and let one thing go beautifully wrong. Full editorial guidance under The Looks.

Beneath the gloss, the occasion is the usual one: eleven years now of celebrating Halloween and my birthday in a single costume, and I'd love nothing more than to see you in the pages. The room votes on the night: The Cover Star, The Avant-Garde, The Method. Confirm below.

House rules
I
A concept is encouraged to the point of legend, never required. The editors would rather have you out of costume than out of the room. Precedents, for the ambitious: ten years of evidence.
II
Your entourage is pre-approved. A friend, a partner, ten strangers in matching veils: the more, the merrier. The scarier, the better.
III
Photographs are taken all night and published without mercy. Arrive prepared to be documented.

Letter from the editors

Thank you for
the spectacle

Ninety-one of you came dressed as your worst impulse. The floor held. One veil did not. We have the photographs, and we are not returning them.

See you next October, under a different name.
